1900 GAR Encampment Antique Civil War Vet Badge

This badge was created in 1900 as an official souvenir to those who attended the Encampment in Chicago for the Grand Army of the Republic. The G.A.R. Encampment took place on August 29th and 30th, and the badge honors the event. The three-piece design has a pin-back on top, and a hanging portion. The silver tone medallions with Abraham Lincoln are fitted over a dark brown tone metal. There is also something quite unique about this G.A.R. badge- it was made from the metal of captured Confederate cannons. It was manufactured by S. D. Childs & Co. Chicago. It measures 2 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches. It is in excellent condition, with a fine patina. The reverse is signed, and marked: "S.D. CHILDS & CO. MAKERS CHICAGO THIS IS TO CERTIFY THAT THIS BADGE IS MADE FROM CAPTURED CANNON"
This encampment made headlines all over the country. This badge is a terrific piece of historic interest that was really a collector's item from the day it was made.
