Larry Rivers was a painter, sculptor, writer, poet, teacher and occasional actor and filmmaker. He was born Yitzroch Loiza Grossberg to Jewish immigrant parents from Ukraine. He got involved in the bebop scene in New York City, and knew Miles Davis, among others. He decided to pursue painting, and created many fine pieces of art while still playing the saxophone. His work is widely collected today in fine public and private collections.
